"Pare down to the essence,
but don't remove the poetry."
An abstract expressionist painter, Amica Whincop harnesses Japanese principles of Simplicity & 'Ma', creating intuitive work rich in depth and emotion. Though her work is purely abstract, our intuition recognises a visual language that mimics the currents of the ocean, natural formations of the earth, a flower in new bloom or the patterns of precious stone. Her compositions activate the senses, allowing for immersive visual experiences that transport you outdoors straight into nature's arms.
Intuition is everything in my creative process, which is why I love using unpredictable materials – water-based acrylics, inks, heat tools, air. I like the works to look like they created themselves, like they just grew there on the canvas, and these fluid media have a mind of their own, so it feels as if it the painting is creating itself. Each colour choice feeds on to the next, everything is reliant on spontaneity and the bliss of not knowing.
Then comes the beautiful part of paring it back to its ‘essence’, letting forms come alive and reveal themselves to me as I work white into the piece, until it eventually comes to a sense of rest.
Its the most heavenly meditative process, and each painting brings me so much joy and self discovery.
Her latest work ‘Given’, serves as a gentle tribute to the gifts freely given us by Mother Earth. Amica intentionally collected the rich, red ochre from her local area, to create the base pigment for each painting – thus, giving each piece that gorgeous dusty, pink hue which so embodies our Australian landscape. The works were created much in the same way as creating a mandala, the forms flowing These pieces are currently on exhibition at Michael Reid Gallery, Murrurundi. 1 Aug – 16th Aug. 2019.
