I’ve been thinking about the idea of ambivalence. I’ve always thought of the word in a negative way, as in not caring about something… but its really quite a cool word – which comes from combining two words “ambi” meaning two and “value” meaning to have worth. If this is the case – this led me to thinking how everything really has worth, and, at the same time, an absence of worth. Could ambivalence be a little bit like Yin and Yang – everything containing the seed of its opposite. Perhaps we don’t always have to know, or be certain, we can totally have mixed feelings about something.. I’m pretty certain I have mixed feelings about a lot of things! Ha ha.. including taking this photo – the one above – me looking totally ambivalent!
“When people see things as beautiful, ugliness is created.
When people see things as good,
evil is created.”
TAO TE CHING
Inspiration for this piece began with this beautiful image I found on the web. In itself its quite an ambivalent capture! Some comments on insta spoke how the image reminded them of the quotes – “Seeds sprout to find a way to the light, if roots can dig their way down to the water.” and “Whitout roots you do not fly” . I was also keen to use this beautiful Australian Ochre pigment.
